MARG – a fresh take on pop music

MARG is a singer/songwriter born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. After moving to the US at a young age she quickly found a passion for the Arts. At the age of 18 she released her first extended play MARG EP and then her debut album ‘The Voices’. Her single ‘Tropical Marijuana’ off ‘The Voices’ resonated well with her listeners gathering her a loyal fanbase. MARG’s music would be described as a fusion of glamorous and gritty, with languid vocals that soften her cutting lyrics that hint at the rawness of human life. MARG takes on pop from a fresh perspective creating an atmosphere of many emotions.

Maria: How did you get into music?

MARG: I have always been around music since I was little. And so when I was young, my mom and dad put me in orchestra and piano. So I've always been around music and then I found more mainstream pop music when I was in late elementary school, and I was really, really dramatic. And I would always only listen to songs that made me feel really, really intensely sad. I don't know why. On Tumblr they used to have these really just dramatic lines and pieces of poetry. And I started to do my own version of that just, I guess, to process my own feelings. And then I would just add melodies and I would do the piano and guitar to it. So that's how I started, like writing songs. And then I met a producer and we made my EP. And yeah, it just kind of started from there.

Maria: How would you describe the genre of music?

MARG: I definitely make pop music. I feel like it's a mixture of a lot of different things. Just any kind of influence that I might have heard growing up or just what I listened to now. I would say a lot of music these days comes from different influences. So it's hard to put it under one genre. But I would say I fall under the pop umbrella. But I love to experiment with different sounds. I definitely am kind of in the r&b pop vibe right now. And I would say before I was  more of an adult pop. But I feel like my sound is always changing, evolving just based on what I like.

Maria: What was your creative process like for writing your latest single Let me Love Ya?

MARG: I was on the coast, this place called Caracas in California. It's like three hours from LA. And I had invited a couple of friends with me for the week just to make music. And I had just finished writing. So basically right now, I've been really sticking to singles from this album that I made. So I just finished writing the album and it was kind of like an emotional dump. And so I was with my friend Johnny who actually produced the beat and Alex, who helped me record and do vocal production. So basically, I was like, “You know what, I want to make a song that's just more lighthearted and fun”. Like a dance/party song. So I kind of just let it flow from there.

Maria: Do you think your process of writing songs has changed in any way since you started releasing music?

MARG: I feel like I've grown as an artist and a person. So I would say maybe what I write about has changed a little bit. But just the way I express it maybe has gotten a little more mature just because I see the world differently than I used to when I was younger. But honestly, I don't really have a specific way of writing. Sometimes I'll literally just get an idea and write a whole song in my notes app. Sometimes I'll go to the studio and just start with the beat. Sometimes I'll have just one line. Sometimes it'll be at the piano. It's random and  I kind of just let it come out.

Maria: What is the message that you would like to share through your songs?

MARG: I would say it varies depending on what I'm writing about. But for me, I think that music is like emotional therapy. And I've had a lot of songs that kind of helped me process my emotions. So I would just want people to feel safe and comfortable to kind of go within and process what they're going through and feel like they have an outlet to express that and feel.

Maria: What advice would you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?

MARG: I would say, be your biggest supporter, believe in yourself 100% and go after what you want. Because there's probably a reason that you want to do it and other people might also benefit from you putting yourself out there.

Maria: If you can have your fans remember one thing about you, what would it be?

MARG: I would say that I hope I always come across very genuine and authentic. I hope that anyone who has ever supported me or listened to me feels that I'm very appreciative and grateful that they listened or connected to anything that I've made.

Maria: Do you have upcoming and future projects?

MARG: I have two more songs off this project. And I feel like I'm always making music. So I definitely have a couple of songs. I don't know if I'm going to add them to this album. Or just kind of start a new era. But I'm working on some visuals right now. Everything's kind of in the pre-production process. But I have two more singles that I'm definitely going to drop before the end of the year. I'm very excited. And I think I'm gonna probably try to do something very early in the year and just keep releasing stuff because I have a lot of songs that I'm really excited about. I feel like I've been playing around with melodies and structures. So definitely just a more evolved version. But, still, me and my sound.
