Learning About Finessed

Chapter 1

My name is Bhaven Moorthy. I’m an aspiring Music Journalist who first went to University with the intentions of graduating with an Economics degree, before eventually trying to become a lawyer. That plan has definitely changed over the years. I dropped out of Economics and graduated with an Arts degree, focused in media and music. I’m now the Editor-in-Chief of Sidedoor Magazine as well as the co-founder of Fragment Radio. Just before quarantine hit, I left a corporate job to freelance for HotNewHipHop… a job that I lost 3 weeks in due to Covid cuts. It’s all good though, I’m making almost as much money through stimulus cheques anyway.

As I was going about my regular quarantine business; writing, uploading, and sharing my work via Sidedoor and Fragment, I came across the Finessed Media Instagram page. Of course, I was pulled in by the follower count, like many of us usually are, but I was more intrigued by the content. In the bio, was “WOC-Led Global Platform for Music Industry Leaders”, which was enough to let me know that I was around the right people. I checked out the website and was further impressed, not only by the team’s resume and accomplishments, but because of the company bio. Finessed wasn’t founded to help just artists, or just journalists, or just executives, it was created to help us all. It was created to bring Music Entrepreneur’s together.

A community of creative individuals all working towards their dreams. A WOC-led initiative, looking to help musicians and entrepreneurs. An opportunity for me to grow and learn, while also contributing. The timing was perfect. I reached out to Finessed after learning that they were looking to expand their community through internships, and because there weren’t any paid positions available for me at the time, I would be granted the opportunity to speak to the CEO, whom I was assured would be a great career-coach. They were right.

After speaking with Founder Alexi Rabadam for just 30 minutes, I knew I was talking to someone who understood what I feel like I’m here to do; and that’s to make a change. I had never met anyone so excited and motivated to help support my dreams. Alexi believed in me, which is all I needed.

Us creatives have had a fire in us since we were young, which is why I’ve been ready to do this myself, but after just one phone call with Alexi, I knew I didn’t have to do this alone. I haven’t been chasing this dream for that long, but I’ve been chasing it for long enough to know that not everyone wants the best for you. That’s not the case with Finessed Media. We’re here to do this together.

Now I’m ready. Ready to work harder, ready to contribute to a company that stands for what the industry lacks, and ready to work towards my highest goals – all while thanking Finessed along the way.

Welcome to the Finessed Media Blog. I’ll be dropping weekly pieces to recap the work that our team is getting done over the next few months. So, if you’re interested in reading about the growth of Finessed Media/any of its members, or even learning about how you can propel your own music industry career, check back here every Tuesday.

If you’d rather see what we do, check us out on social media, or attend our weekly events.

If you’d rather listen to what we do, peep the podcast we’re working on.

Our team is made up of artist managers, playlist curators, music supervisors, journalists, musicians, and so much more. If you’re anything like us, you’re tired of the way things are, and you’re excited to change the landscape. Let’s do it through Finessed.
